Greenwood Furnace State Park
This beautiful park is located in the heart of Huntingdon County on the northern edge of Frankstown Township. It’s about 20 miles from downtown Huntingdon, which makes it an ideal place to visit if you want to get away from it all for a few hours or an entire day.
The park has 2,000 acres of forested land with trails that wind through the woods and around several ponds. You can spend hours hiking along these trails without seeing another person! There are also several historical buildings located on the grounds, including a gristmill, sawmill, and blacksmith shop that were built between 1800-1830 by Levi Shafer Jr., who was one of Pennsylvania’s first ironmasters.
Penn-Roosevelt State Park
Penn-Roosevelt State Park is a 1,934-acre park in Huntingdon County. It’s located just north of the town of Lock Haven, on the east bank of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. The park’s 23-mile trail system offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.
The park also has an extensive network of trails for cross-country skiing during winter months. Park visitors can enjoy camping at one of three campgrounds within Penn-Roosevelt State Park: Knob Campground, Long Point Campground, or Warren Point Campground.
Whipple Dam State Park
Whipple Dam State Park is located along the Juniata River, which flows between Huntingdon and Bedford. The park has several trails that run along the river and through the forest. The most popular trail at Whipple Dam State Park is a 2.5-mile loop called the Juniata River Trail that starts off on the north side of the dam, crosses over it, and then returns down the other side.
The trail crosses several bridges over small creeks before ending at a large field where you can see wildflowers in bloom during springtime or watch birds during winter months. If you want more adventure than just hiking through fields, rock climbing is another option at this park. There are several areas with rocks that have been made smooth from years of water rushing over them.
